Fumihiko Maki, Honored Architect of Understated Buildings, Dies at 95

A Pritzker Prize winner, he designed notable projects in his native Japan and in the U.S., including 4 World Trade Center and the M.I.T. Media Lab’s new home.

Henry Moore: Shadows on the Wall

8 June – 22 September 2024
The Courtauld Gallery, London

Opening this week at The Courtauld Gallery, this focused new exhibition takes Henry Moore's celebrated Shelter drawings as the starting point for a new interpretation of some of his most individual post-War artworks.

Opening soon - Henry Moore: Shadows on the Wall
During the Blitz (Sep 1940 - May 1941), crowds of people sought refuge in London's Underground stations to escape the nighly bombardments by the German Air Force. Moved by what he saw there and in other makeshift shelters, the sculptor Henry Moore (1898-1986) documented these scenes in hundreds of haunting sketches known as the Shelter Drawings.
Shadows on the Wall investigates the artist’s fascination with the curved brick walls and cavernous tunnels of those spaces, taking these drawings as a point of departure for interpreting some of his post-war drawings and sculpture.
Presented in collaboration with the Henry Moore Foundation.

Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius: contacts prior to the Second World War

Le Corbusier left neither memoirs nor a life history written with his own pen. Nonetheless, he did leave hundreds of boxes filled with diaries, letters, notes, drawings with comments attached, designs and sketches – a wealth of documentary evidence upon which future historians might reconstruct his biography. When Le Corbusier decided that he was destined to become a great architect and appointed to bring a new architecture into the world, with full deliberation, he therefore meticulously kept every shred of documentation of his life, as had Stendhal and Thomas Mann before him. Most of this vast body of information is stored at the Fondation Le Corbusier in Paris. The author of this article had the opportunity to examine this material in depth, as well as the sources found at the Bauhaus-Archiv in Berlin and the CIAM-Archiv in Zürich. The extensive documentation available made it possible to study Le Corbusier’s contacts with leading architects in many countries. This paper focuses on one of these contacts – the relationship between Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius.
