A trusted man of the king of France Louis XII, Charles II of Amboise, born in Chaumont-sur-Loire in 1473, he carried out military and government functions until he became Duke of Milan when the city was subject to the French. Here he was a friend of Leonardo and commissioned Amadeo to build the sanctuary of Santa Maria alla Fontana, in the place of worship where a spring gushed that was believed to have miraculous effects; the same duke seems to have recovered from an eye disease thanks to this water. The wealth of miraculous properties of the place is added to that of the frescoes: the oldest date back to the period between the first and second decade of the sixteenth century, are located in correspondence with the vault of the former sacristy and present symbolic motifs on the theme of healing. At the center of the umbrella vault is the "God the Father blessing", in wood and gilded stucco, surrounded by frescoes with images of the Apostles.
