"DIANA AND ACTAEON" 1935
In 1929, Harrison Williams (1873-1953) and his wife, née Mona Bush (1897-1983) - American fashion icon and famous art lover - had a large villa built, Oak Point , located in Bayville, Long Island, by the Delano & Aldrich agency, essential architects of the New York elite. For the bathhouse, William A. Delano ordered four decorative panels from Bernard Boutet de Monvel telling the story of Diane's life: La Chasse , La Curée , Le Repos and Le Bainwhere Diane, surprising Actaeon, metamorphoses him into a deer to be devoured by her dogs.
In his 2001 monograph, Stéphane-Jacques Addade describes the painting: " The painter [...] placed at the foot of a tropical, monumental and lush vegetation, the tiny sinusoidal frieze of figures whose gestures, as much as the disposition of profile and solid color were reminiscent of the choreographic design desired by Vaslav Nijinsky for Afternoon of a Faun . "(Stéphane-Jacques Addade, op. cit. pp. 274-275).
