当館の写真コレクションによる特集展示「ユージン・スミス生誕100年」展が好評開催中です。（新館・常設展示室7にて12月24日まで）。

フォト・ジャーナリズムの歴史に偉大な足跡を残したドキュメンタリー写真家、W.ユージン・スミス（William Eugene Smith, 1918-1978）は、アメリカ合衆国、カンザス州に生まれ育ち、18歳でプロの写真家を目指してニューヨークに移りました。日本には縁が深く、第二次世界大戦中は太平洋戦争に従軍し、サイパンや硫黄島、沖縄を取材。日本人の惨状に哀れみの感情を抱きながら、スミス自身も沖縄で日本軍の飛翔弾によって左腕損傷等の重傷を負いました。1961年からは日本企業の日立を取材。1971年から3年余りを熊本県の水俣に滞在し、水俣病の実態を丁寧に取材し、最後のフォト・エッセイ『MINAMATA (写真集 水俣)』が出版されました。本展では生誕100年を記念して、当館が所蔵する約50点のヴィンテージ・プリントから選りすぐり、1945年から『MINAMATA (写真集 水俣)』出版までの約30年間の彼のフォト・ジャーナリズムの世界観を展観します。

William Eugene Smith (December 30, 1918 – October 15, 1978) was an American photojournalist, who has been described as "perhaps the single most important American photographer in the development of the editorial photo essay."[1] His major photo essays include World War II photographs, the dedication of an American country doctor and a nurse midwife, the clinic of Dr Schweitzer in French Equatorial Africa, the city of Pittsburgh, and the pollution which damaged the health of the residents of Minamata in Japan.[2] His 1948 series, Country Doctor, photographed for Life magazine is now recognised as "the first extended editorial photo story".[1]
