Happy Christmas Eve! Did you know this depiction of the Virgin and Child by Castiglione is composed only of scrapes? The monotype technique, invented by the artist, consists of laying sticky oil on a metal plate, scraping the oil away with a stick, then placing a piece of paper on the plate to transfer the image.
