Suzanne Valadon grew up in poverty, worked as a circus acrobat, modeled for artists like Renoir and Toulouse Lautrec, and then quietly taught herself how to paint by watching them work. When she finally stepped into the art world as an artist, she didn’t play by the rules. Her paintings rejected idealized beauty, challenged the male gaze, and claimed space for women as real, complex subjects. Long before it was accepted, Valadon painted women on her own terms and changed art history in the process.
