Pierre Bonnard (French, 1867–1947)

Pierre Bonnard👨‍🎨🎨🇫🇷
French painter, illustrator and printmaker
(3 October 1867 – 23 January 1947.
<<Bonnard also set the breakfast table into his best-developed framed external view, The Breakfast Room (Dining Room Overlooking the Garden) from 1930-31. This combines the still life of the laid table in the foreground, the powerful vertical framing of French windows, and the rich terrace landscape beyond. Ghostly repoussoir is provided by thin slivers of figures at the edges of his canvas.>>

"A beauty outside nature." That’s how one artist described Pierre Bonnard’s approach to painting. We see that here in his interpretation of a favorite subject in late 19th-century art: a woman in the privacy of her bath. Bonnard enlivens the work with radiant, jewel-like colors: light pinks next to magentas, sea-foam green next to pale blue, and bold swaths of marigold.
The way he applied the paint gives vibrancy to the surface of the canvas. Which color catches your eye first? Bonnard was known for building up his paintings with small touches and many layers of color. The artist didn’t use a big brush, so we don't see any large, flat patches. Instead, everything is moving; the shapes break and come back together as one's eye wanders over the canvas.

Pierre Bonnard was born on this day in 1867. The artist rarely painted from life. Instead, he preferred to make pencil sketches in small diaries and then rely on these, along with his memory, once in the studio.

Happy birthday to Pierre Bonnard, born on this day in 1867. Bonnard explicitly admitted that he could only paint the familiar. The rituals of daily life—taking tea, feeding the cat, tending to the dinner table—were his subjects.
