Advent Calendar Day 12 – A Snow Scene
This colour woodblock print by Nishiyama Hōen (1804–1867) shows a Shintō shrine surrounded by snow-covered trees. A wooden bridge and steps lead to the shrine, whose entrance is marked by a torii gate. It may be a depiction of Sumiyoshi shrine in the city of Osaka, Japan.
Hōen was a leading Osaka artist who worked in the Shijō style – characterised by its lyrical realism. He was known for his refined and skill at drawing, and was masterly in his handling of colour.
