New bike and pedestrian Thames bridge designs – in pictures
All 74 designs for a £40m pedestrian and cycle bridge between Nine Elms and Pimlico went on show on Monday. Four designs will be shortlisted next month
- The designs are being displayed on an anonymous basis to comply with EU competitive procurement rules
- ‘This ensures reputations play no part and that the designs themselves are the sole focus of attention,’ say the exhibition organisers
- The Architects’ Journal reports that the competition entries include a mix of ‘world renowned architects’ and ‘up-and-coming practices’
- A jury panel including architects, engineers and council leaders will recommend a shortlist of up to four designs, which will be developed into more detailed proposals
- A TfL transport study forecast 18,000 crossings a day, evenly between people on bike and on foot
- ‘The successful entry will have to win the hearts of Londoners who are tremendously proud of their river and its rich architectural heritage,’ says Wandsworth Council leader Ravi Govindia
- Wandsworth Council says the crossing will support growth in Nine Elms and Vauxhall ‘where tens of thousand of new jobs and homes are now being created alongside billions in growth and tax receipts’
- The winner is set to be announced in July
