Joseph Cornell placed everyday materials inside glass-fronted boxes to showcase his unique vision of the world.
The exterior skin of "Sand Fountain" (1948) is covered in faded pages from science and history books, while the inner sides of the box are lined with pieces of astronomical maps. Inside sits a broken cordial glass, half buried in yellow sand, whose shape recalls an hourglass. A white structure above resembles the keystone of an arch.
When "Sand Fountain" is inverted the sand collects inside the structure. When the box is righted, the sand pours into the broken glass below, which begins to overflow. This photograph shows the the box in action.
