💭 Dreaming of being as cosy as this little lad
We’re excited to share that this tender sketch by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn has found a new home in the Museum
One of the greatest storytellers in the history of art, Rembrandt (1606–1669) was a prolific painter, draughtsman, and etcher in Holland’s Golden Age. His work is known for its sensitive exploration of human emotion, based on his pre-occupation with drawing from life. ✨
As Rembrandt often used his immediate surroundings as inspiration, it was long assumed that the baby in this picture was his son Titus (though we now know this picture was created when Titus was a little older). The sketch would go on to be used as a study for the Christ child in his painting of the Holy Family.
🍃 In spring, this delicate new addition to the Museum’s collection of Prints and Drawings will be put on temporary display alongside other works on paper by the Dutch master.
A delicate sketch made in black chalk of a baby wearing a small cap, asleep in a cradle.
