Cynthia Morris Sherman (born 1954)[2] is an American artist whose work consists primarily of photographic self-portraits, depicting herself in many different contexts and as various imagined characters.

Her breakthrough work is often considered to be the collected Untitled Film Stills, a series of 70 black-and-white photographs of herself evoking typical female roles in performance media (especially arthouse films and popular B-movies). In the 1980s, she used color film and large prints, and focused more on costume, lighting and facial expression.

Since the mid-1970s, artist #CindySherman has taken self-portraits, combining the roles of director, photographer and leading actress to create provocative, intriguing images.
She adopts a variety of personas and disguises that explore and expose well-defined images and stereotypes of women in Western society across the ages.
Back in 2003, we hosted a major survey of Sherman’s work that expanded beyond the gallery into the London Underground at Gloucester Road station.
The show centred on the many characters and portraits Sherman created over the past three decades, some of which include clowns (see last image) which Sherman said she uses “as a trigger for showing the multi-layered emotional depths within a painted smile”. Did you see the show? Let us know!
