The Big, Fat Art of Fernando Botero Fernando Botero, dubbed The 'Picasso of South America', returns to the humble house of his childhood in Colombia..

The Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero is one of the world’s most successful living artists. For more than 40 years, he’s produced works - often featuring generously-proportioned figures in brightly-coloured landscapes - that have been coveted by wealthy collectors all over the world.

With homes in Paris, Monte Carlo and Manhattan, his success has given him an enviable lifestyle – an existence far removed from his impoverished childhood in the tough barrios of Medellin.

However, Botero has never forgotten his roots. He grew up in the very same districts as the notorious drug baron Pablo Escobar (who has featured in one of Botero’s most controversial pictures).

Likewise, his latest paintings, which depict the victims of torture at the US-run Abu Ghraib prison - express Botero's horror at the plight of the people of Iraq.

In this film, Steve Smith accompanies Botero as he returns to his troubled homeland, where he has been the target of numerous kidnap attempts and must now be escorted by armed guards.

As Botero arrives, he discovers that a political firestorm has engulfed his son - a charismatic politician who faces years in prison following allegations of corruption.

Fernando Botero Angulo (born 19 April 1932) is a Colombian figurative artist and sculptor. Born in Medellín, his signature style, also known as "Boterismo", depicts people and figures in large, exaggerated volume, which can represent political criticism or humor, depending on the piece. He is considered the most recognized and quoted living artist from Latin America,^[2][3][4] and his art can be found in highly visible places around the world, such as Park Avenue in New York City and the Champs-Élysées in Paris.^[5]

Self-titled "the most Colombian of Colombian artists" early on, he came to national prominence when he won the first prize at the Salón de Artistas Colombianos in 1958. Working most of the year in Paris, in the last three decades^[when?] he has achieved international recognition for his paintings, drawings and sculpture, with exhibitions across the world.^[6] His art is collected by many major international museums, corporations, and private collectors. In 2012, he received the International Sculpture Center's Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award.^[7]

Le Bœuf sur le toit (literally "the ox on the roof"), Op. 58 is a short piece for small orchestra by the composer Darius Milhaud, written in 1919–20. Milhaud conceived the piece as incidental music for any one of the comic silent films of Charlie Chaplin, but it received its premiere as the music for a ballet staged by Jean Cocteau in February 1920.

In this painting, René Magritte does what he does best: he takes our familiar world, breaks it into pieces, and then reassembles it...

As one of the leading figures of the surrealist movement in 1920s Paris, Magritte’s approach mirrors one of the group’s fundamental principles. The surrealist manifesto, a multi-page written declaration drawn up by André Breton in 1924, states their aim was to “liberate the mind by subverting rational thought and giving free reign to the unconscious.”

That’s why the figure and horse in this painting are somewhat familiar to us: Magritte ingeniously distorts what would be an ordinary scene by creating an optical illusion. He tricks your eye by combining separate elements into one complete image, transforming a horseback rider into a dreamlike vision.

In doing this, Magritte not only takes us out of our world, but exposes how absurd our everyday world can be.

 From 1947, he served as the last secretary of André Breton and became an essential figure of the surrealist current.

Alexandrian was an advocate of the philosophy Nietzsche advanced in The Gay Science (Die fröhliche Wissenschaft). He headed the journal Supérieur Inconnu (a title provided by Breton), which exalts four values shared by the surrealists and Alexandrian: dreams, love, knowledge, and revolution. Catherine Millet is one notable contributor to the magazine.

Alexandrian was a friend of Victor Brauner, and remained an admirer of Charles Fourier, and an ardent defender of Mata Hari.

Minotaure: Surrealist Magazine from the 1930s

Minotaure, published in Paris between 1933–39, was a Surrealist-oriented publication founded by Albert Skira with editors André Breton and Pierre Mabille. Prior to serving as a Minotaure editor, Breton lent his support by publishing the full-page advertisement reproduced to the right, which announced the first issue of the new publication in the final issue of Le Surréalisme au service de la revolution.

Minotaure, although not exclusively Surrealist in orientation, was faithful to the Surrealist spirit. The periodical’s appeal for the mainstream art public gained wider recognition for the movement, especially with its feature articles on architecture, not commonly found in other Surrealist publications. The goal of Minotaure was to introduce Surrealism to a new generation of theorists and artists, but with the onset of World War II in Europe, Skira ceased publication in 1939.

Each number of Minotaure included contributions from artists, writers, philosophers, critics, and psychoanalysts, and was meant to be read as a collective work. Contributors included Paul Éluard, Salvador Dalí, Jacques Lacan, Georges Bataille, and Kurt Veil. Covers included artwork by Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Gaston-Louis Roux, André Derain, Francisco Borés, Joan Miró, Dalí, Henri Matisse, René Magritte, Max Ernst, André Masson, and Diego Rivera.
