An Apostle of Joy in Africa Dies

Malick Sidibé’s black-and-white photographs of young partygoers in his native country captured the exuberance of a newly independent Mali in the 1960s. He was 80.

Men were as interested in suits as they were in colourful boubous. Women wore dresses and trousers. They danced to vinyl records of brassy town bands, and drove foreign motorcycles with chrome finishings. All of these fine, fun things were brought to Malick Sidibe’s portrait studio
