Giorgio Vasari was born ‪#‎onthisday‬ in 1511. Of major importance to the Italian Renaissance, his work spanned art, architecture, and writing. Vasari worked on the painted dome in Florence Cathedral, and began the design for the Uffizi Gallery buildings. Here are some of his elegant drawings from the collection. http://ow.ly/AvRh302svLa「 The Agony in the Garden; Christ kneeling in prayer, a putto before him and Peter, James and John sleeping in the foreground. Pen and brown ink, with brown wash, the figure of Christ heightened with white. 」

Lives of the Painters, Sculptors and Architects
此書有漢譯
"Men of genius sometimes accomplish most when they work the least, for they are thinking out inventions and forming in their minds the perfect idea that they subsequently express with their hands."
-- Giorgio Vasari (1511–1574)

Vasari is the single most important figure in the history of European art criticism; his Lives of the Painters, Sculptors and Architects has been a founding text and an enduring touchstone for historians and critics in the four centuries since its composition. Filled with vivid biographical detail, commentary on painterly technique and acute analysis of pictures, the Lives also provides a dramatic historical survey of the decline in Italian painting during the Middle Ages and its rebirth in what Vasari himself called a rinascita or renaissance, thereby naming not only a historical epoch but a crucial moment in the history of human consciousness. As Kenneth Clark said, ‘Vasari’s Lives is not only an indispensable source book, but the most vivid, entertaining and convincing picture of Italian art at its greatest period.’
