French artist Edouard Manet was born #onthisday in 1832. This portrait of aspiring Parisian actress Jeanne Demarsy showcases the artist’s lively printmaking style. Manet is sometimes called ‘the first Modernist and the last Old Master’ – he was inspired by the works of artists from history, but his style was revolutionary enough to be shunned by the establishment of the day.
