Francisco de Zurbarán

Francisco de Zurbarán (baptized November 7, 1598 – August 27, 1664) was a Spanishpainter. He is known primarily for his religious paintings depicting monks, nuns, and martyrs, and for his still-lifes. Zurbarán gained the nickname Spanish Caravaggio, owing to the forceful, realistic use of chiaroscuro in which he excelled.

Born on this day in 1598 was Spanish Baroque religious painter Francisco Zurbarán. Among his works in the collection of the Hermitage museum is the intimate picture 'Childhood of the Virgin' from his late period. Perhaps, the model of the figure of the Virgin for this work was Zurbarán`s seven-year daughter Manuela.
