Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577–1640)

This drawing was made in preparation for an engraving. The drama of the episode is reinforced by the white heightening which stands out boldly on the bodies and the crisp drapery of the figures. All the forms are clearly modelled to help the engraver follow the drawn design. Rubens had already painted the picture (now in the Museum voor schone Kunsten, Antwerp) but he employed engravers so that his work could circulate throughout Europe. This would bring him to the attention of new patrons and connoisseurs who might not otherwise have been able to see and buy his work. The 'Coup de Lance', drawing, 1631.

Turning to the traditional theme of the elements, Rubens linked it with burning contemporary questions of great importance to his native land: in the union of Earth and Water, Rubens depicted the union of Antwerp and the River Scheldt, the mouth of which was then blocked by the Dutch, depriving Flanders of an outlet to the sea. Ludovicus Nonnius was a doctor and a friend of Rubens. He is holding ‘Diaeteticon sive de recibaria, Libri IV’, which may have been the first book to treat diet as an important factor in health: http://bit.ly/1I9jiZa

Ludovicus Nonnius (1553 - 1645) was a friend of Rubens. He was a doctor and antiquarian from a Portuguese family who worked in Antwerp. The book he holds and the objects surrounding him refer to his accomplishments. The sitter wrote a number of works, of which his best known the 'Diaeteticon sive de recibaria, Libri IV' (Antwerp 1627), has been claimed as the first book to treat diet as an important factor in health. It was based upon the eating habits of the ancient Romans. The presence of the bust of Hippocrates (the Greek founder of medicine) identifies his profession and his respect for Antiquity - a vital aspect of contemporary learning.

The portrait is dated to the late 1620s on grounds of style. It was probably painted shortly before Rubens's diplomatic journeys of 1628-30, and may date from the year of publication of the 'Diaeteticon', which could be the book the sitter holds. The bust is based upon a drawing after the antique by the artist which was the subject of an engraving by Schelte à Bolswert of 1638.

Artist Peter Paul Rubens died ‪#‎onthisday‬ in 1640. Here's his magnificent drawing of a lioness http://ow.ly/xqvub
This is a magnificent drawing in both scale and style. It is drawn in black and yellow chalk, though Rubens also used a grey wash and some white heightening in order to bring the animal to life on paper. The lioness is drawn from behind. Her front paw is raised and her mouth open, the fangs clearly visible. White heightening brings out the lighted area around the tail and the joints of the back legs. Both short and longer chalk strokes are used to suggest the different textures of the fur and mane. http://ow.ly/QIv8r
What is your must-see painting? Perhaps this Rubens? The artist has captured the dramatic moment in the story of Samson and Delilah, when Samson's hair is being cut, leading to Samson being drained of his strength: http://bit.ly/1GGtFp0
