Portrait of Madame Canals by Pablo Picasso- 1905

He occasionally acted as private secretary to the poet Paul Verlaine, who dedicated a sonnet to his friend. Picasso probably met the ragged dandy in the brasseries and seedy bars they both haunted, and would have been fascinated by his elderly, grimacing features.

Paul-Marie Verlaine (/vɛərˈlɛn/;[1] French: [vɛʁlɛn]; 30 March 1844 – 8 January 1896) was a French poet associated with the Decadent movement

This arresting portrait of Bibi la Purée, a famous reprobate in turn-of-the century Paris, was painted by the 20-year-old Picasso when he returned to Paris in 1901 ...

There are shades of Lautrec’s Bohemian underworld too in Picasso’s charismatic portrait of ‘Bibi-la-Puree’, a former actor, one-time secretary to Verlaine and inveterate absinthe-drinker (etre dans la puree apparently meaning to be in dire straits).
