William Hogarth — the 18th-century printmaker known for his satirical and cutting commentary on society's foibles — died today in 1764. Pictured here is his Credulity, Superstition, and Fanaticism (1762), completed just 2 years before his death. The strange scene in the lower left corner is a reference to Mary Toft, a woman from Surrey who claimed she'd given birth to a litter of rabbits, an elaborate hoax which even had King George I’s own court physicians fooled.
