Biography
Son of Andrea Valadier, a Provencal silversmith who moved to Rome in 1714, Luigi Valadier was the father of the silversmiths Filippo, Tommaso and Luigi as well as the famous architect Giuseppe Valadier. He began his career in the father's workshop located in Via del Babuino in Rome, later replacing his father in the direction of the works in 1759. Goldsmith of trust of several popes since 1769, he also worked for several highly-skilled Italian and foreign clients, such as the Elector Carlo Teodoro di Baviera (for whom he executed a centerpiece with the silver reproduction of the Trajan's Column) and Enrico Benedetto Stuart, duke of York and cardinal.

In addition to these works, Pius VI commissioned him a precious glass of lapis lazuli that he gave to King Stanislaus II Augusto Poniatowski or a large silver mirror for Palazzo Chigi in Rome. In 1770 he executed the grandiose high altar of the Cathedral of Monreale, near Palermo, with a rich and refined liturgical set.

In 1785 its existence ended tragically: during the work of the current bell of the Basilica of San Pietro, with a diameter of mt. 2.30 by weight of 10 tons. Luigi, who was not a founder of bells fearing a failure, on the eve of the merger committed suicide by throwing himself into the Tiber. In fact, studies carried out on the books of accounts suggest that the motive was a disastrous economic situation, deriving from the fact that Valadier seemed to have joined in business with a partner who claimed 24% of the annual collections. The casting was then completed by his son Giuseppe.
