"World War I and the Visual Arts,"

Today marks 100 years since the end of World War I. Artists and intellectuals, many of whom experienced combat firsthand, responded in myriad, often contradictory ways to the world’s first modern war. The various sentiments the war provoked—from initial enthusiasm and hope for spiritual salvation, to shock and horror at the brutality of the fighting, to deep mourning and regret—are all present in the art of the period.
