Lucas van Leyden 1494 –1533

Carel van Mander's biography accuses Mabuse of an unruly life; yet it describes the solid education he must have had to learn his trade so well. It also describes the splendid appearance of Gossaert, dressed in gold brocade, as he accompanied Lucas van Leyden on a pleasure trip to Ghent, Mechelen and Antwerp in 1527.[1]

Lucas van Leyden (Leiden, 1494 – 8 August 1533, Leiden), also named either Lucas Hugensz or Lucas Jacobsz,[1] was a Dutch engraver and painter, born and mainly active inLeiden. Lucas van Leyden was among the first Dutch exponents of genre painting and is generally regarded as a very accomplished engraver.[2]
