Giorgio Vasari, An Allegory of the Immaculate Conception, 1540. Oil on canvas.

Italian painter Giorgio Vasari was born #onthisday in 1511.
A man of many talents, Vasari was also an architect, writer and historian. Often called “the first art historian”, he was most famous for his book Le Vite, or The Lives, which was an extensive series of artist biographies published in 1550.
This striking oil painting is a small-scale version of his celebrated altarpiece for the chapel of Bindo Altoviti in the Florentine church of SS. Apostoli.
