From King Arthur to King Midas, the mythology of kings has long been a powerful source of inspiration for artists.
French designer and engraver Jean Le Pautre often depicted mythological kings in his work, including "The Abduction of Helen of Troy" by Theseus, the "Funeral Pyre of Memnon," and "Midas with Apollo and Pan."
Why do mythological kings make such good subjects? What is it about them that captures and holds the imagination?
